Today was a first. First day of supervised practice rotations - in internal medicine. I worked with a physician assistant who see patients in the fields of rheumatology (joints, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.) and pulmonology (lungs, smokers, emphysema, COPD, etc.).
I learned all about bone density scans (again), pulmonology function tests, helped interview a patient, unsuccessfully took a blood pressure on an obese woman (that's what nurses are for - ha!) and learned a few things.
To my friends and family - please take your calcium and stay in shape - you're probably going to have osteoporosis, so do these things to help yourself; also, please stop smoking. If you could see first-hand the harm that is done to your body from such things as smoking and other diseases, I GUARANTEE that you would make more of an effort. Half of the battle being a healthcare provider will be trying to educate patients on the importance of their health.
Overall - take care of yourself, take responsibility and follow doctor's orders. That's the general take home message for the day.
We have two exams this week (endocrinology - hormones) and geriatrics (this one is a final exam).
Please pray for my continued success!
love & prayers~
